The Aluminium Stewardship Initiative’s (ASI) Performance Standard recognizes the responsible production, sourcing and stewardship of aluminium. The Chain of Custody (CoC) Standard sets out requirements for the creation of a chain of custody for CoC material, including ASI Aluminium, which is produced and processed through the value chain into the downstream sectors.

It means not only that the sites and their practices are certified, but that the physical metal they process also is certified, when obtained from ASI-certified sources.

The certification of the Tønder plant covers the site’s production of aluminium solutions, including extrusion and fabrication activities, as well as surface treatment.

“It is great seeing how our hard work during this difficult year has been rewarded. ASI Certification represents a new step in our sustainability agenda, and it supports our customer demands for aluminium products that are sourced and produced responsibly,” says Mette Boye Sørensen, who manages the plant.

Hydro Extrusion Denmark develops and produces more than 25,000 tons of aluminium profiles annually with two extrusion lines. The plant also has an in-house fabrication line and offers surface treatment capabilities to its customers, who are located mainly in Denmark and Germany.

In 2020, the company added Hydro CIRCAL and Hydro REDUXA to its customer offering. These low-carbon aluminium products help to enable customers to reach their respective sustainability goals and meet the demands of climate-conscious consumers.

Hydro employs about 260 people at the extrusion plant, and around 700 people in total in Denmark. Hydro’s aluminium tubing plant in Tønder was certified according to both ASI standards in April 2020.

Strong support for customers

“I’d like to congratulate our entire team at the plant for this achievement. Doing business the right way is what our company is about,” says executive vice president Erik Fossum, who leads Hydro’s Extrusions business area.

Hydro Extrusions is the largest business area in Hydro with 22,000 employees in 40 countries. It delivers tailored aluminium components and solutions to all industries, from automotive and mass transportation to building and construction, electronics, offshore and maritime. The business area serves more than 30,000 customers across the world.
