Since the first investment in 2017, Hydro Batteries has partnered with companies, academia, and people, in and outside of the industry, in the pursuit of building world class sustainable battery material businesses.

              Our ambition: Empowering the future of green mobility 

              We have a bold ambition – to lead the way in sustainable battery materials, empowering the future of green mobility. Our team is dedicated to building companies producing critical raw materials locally and responsibly, while drastically reducing the environmental footprint of battery production. We’re not only about building new businesses, but also shaping a better and more sustainable tomorrow.  

              The demand for battery materials is surging, primarily driven by the increasing popularity of electric vehicles (EVs) and the global transition towards a clean energy system. The entire world is set for continued growth in EV sales, further amplifying the need for sustainable battery materials for decades to come. 

              Our 2030 Strategy 

              Our strategic roadmap towards 2030 is built around three pillars and is focused on enabling long-term sustainable growth in our growing portfolio. 

              1. Circular solutions: Our commitment to minimizing waste and fostering circularity in the battery industry acknowledges the need for a more sustainable production. By establishing a circular ecosystem that recover, recycle, and reuse end-of-life batteries we significantly reduce the environmental impact of material sourcing. 
              2. Anode materials: Anode materials represents a significant part of current carbon footprint for EV-batteries and will be key to ensure a truly sustainable battery industry. Our strategy for anode materials is underpinned by innovative approaches that aim to reshape the battery landscape.  
              3. Lithium: Our efforts to enable a sustainable lithium supply in Europe acknowledges the significant gaps in the current landscape. With the Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) as a key solution, we are able to produce lithium with a much lower environmental footprint compared to traditional production methods.

Hydro’s experience in developing industries based on renewable energy forms the foundation for our battery businesses. As a company with roots dating back to 1905, we’ve always thrived on addressing the world's most pressing challenges. Today, we’re at a crossroads in our effort to combat climate change. Our portfolio is well positioned to accelerate the green mobility transition, which is crucial in creating a more sustainable tomorrow.  

              Sustainability is core for the Batteries unit

              In 2023, we joined hands with Porsche through a MoU to jointly explore and develop solutions that enable and strengthen Porsche’s access to recycled battery material. This collaboration marks a significant step in our journey. Together, we are set out to shape the market for local and sustainable battery materials. 

              In Hydro, we have the unique ability to offer not only low carbon aluminum but also sustainable battery materials. We are well-positioned to help our automotive partners in achieving their climate ambitions.. This isn't just about business, it's about collective action to drive change, shape a better tomorrow, and empower the future of green mobility. 

              Growth Companies

              Hydrovolt: Pioneering EV Battery Recycling 

              Owned 50% by Hydro 
              Hydrovolt is leading the industry towards sustainable battery recycling. Hydrovolt, will recover key components and materials from EV batteries. Operating Norway's first EV battery recycling plant, Hydrovolt aims to recycle over 12,000 tons of battery packs annually. 

              Vianode: Spearheading Sustainable Anode Materials 

              Owned 30% by Hydro. 
              Vianode addresses Europe's and North America’s anode graphite demand sustainably. Vianode provides products with up to 90% lower CO2 emissions. and aims to provide battery materials for 2 million electric vehicles yearly by 2030. 

              Lithium de France: Sustainable Lithium Production 

              Owned 12% by Hydro 
              Lithium de France is leading the way to develop sustainable lithium projects. Utilizing geothermal heat and closed-loop systems, the French company provides heat services and extracts lithium responsibly for battery manufacturing, contributing to a greener battery industry.  

              E-magy: Leading the Charge with Nano-Porous Silicon 

              5M EUR invested by Hydro 
              E-magy drives innovation in nano-porous silicon, the next generation anode material, for enhanced battery performance. Planning to scale up for commercial production, E-magy is pushing the boundaries of EV-battery performance.

              Corvus is the global leader in battery systems for the maritime industry and is driving sustainability in the industry trough developing innovative products. As a leader in energy storage solutions, Corvus pioneers zero-emission solutions for a greener maritime future. 

              Northvolt: Pioneering Green Battery Cells  

              Owned 0,6% by Hydro 
              Northvolt is one of Europe’s leading integrated battery cell producers. With customer contracts exceeding $50 billion, Northvolt accelerate the transition to a decarbonized future, by supplying sustainable, high-quality battery cells and systems.
