Products and materials that contribute to a more sustainable construction industry

It can be challenging to navigate the jungle of products, labels and materials on the market, and to find trustworthy and accurate information on environmental impact.

Numerous greener building materials are now available that can help builders reduce the environmental impact of building construction, as well as features like sun control and integrated photovoltaics systems. But can be difficult to identify the most eco-friendly building materials, as the definition and calculations do not necessarily follow the same standards.

According to Smart Cities, cork, bamboo, reclaimed or recycled wood and metal are among the most eco-friendly building materials available. However, in order to compare, it is important to make sure you understand the life-cycle analysis calculations of your materials, including the cost and environmental impact of maintenance.

In Hydro, we have experts who can help you chose the right aluminium solutions for your buildings and better understand how to calculate the total footprint of the solutions you choose.

Materials for sustainable buildings

We offer recycled aluminium through the Hydro CIRCAL product line. Hydro CIRCAL is a range of products made with recycled, post-consumer scrap. With recycled content, we reduce energy use drastically, while still being able to offer high-quality products.

Recycled aluminium has a low carbon footprint and is also a sustainable alternative for buildings, as it is long-lasting material that does not need frequent replacement or maintenance.

Labels for sustainable buildings

If you want comparisons of products, using independently verified EPDs as your tool, then you can find them easily in common databases such as Ökobaudat, GABI, EPD Norge, InData Network and Environdec.

An increasing number of green building rating systems like BREEAM, LEED and DGNB are also evolving to integrate measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions during the full life cycle, to evaluate and understand the emissions of materials and the construction phase, to reduce waste and to value recyclable materials.

Products and solutions for sustainable buildings

Solutions that allow for sun control and thermal efficiencies can also ensure that the building in its use phase has a low environmental impact. Hydro offers various façade and building solutions through its building brands Technal, Sapa and Wicona.

Today all the façade systems are produced in Hydro Circal75R. More products will join the façades systems, showing our commitment to decrease the building's carbon footprint.
