In 2018, an extreme rainfall event occurred in northern Brazil, where Hydro has operations: the Alunorte alumina refinery and the Albras aluminium plant. After concerns about water run-off from our sites, the authorities curtailed production for a period. Investigations found that no harmful emissions resulted. In 2019, Hilde Merete Aasheim was named CEO, the first female to hold this position since the company was founded in 1905. Also that year, Hydro suffered a cyber-attack on its operations around the globe. In 2020, Hydro launched a new strategy toward 2025, including key profitability and sustainability targets. In 2021, the company’s rolling business was sold to an American company.
In 2023, Hydro launched a revised strategy toward 2030, stepping up growth in aluminium recycling and extrusions, and in ambitions within renewable power generation. In 2024, Eivind Kallevik became the thirteen CEO of Hydro, launching his agenda for accelerating Hydro’s strategy of pioneering the green aluminium transition, powered by renewable energy towards 2030.
